Storyline
Claude is a Jew. Because of the risks of an arrest (France is occupied by the Nazis), his parents send him away to an elderly couple in the country. Pepe, the husband, is a Petain supporter and a anti-Semite, but he does not know about Claude's religion. The film is the story of their growing mutual affection.

Trivia:
Director Claude Berri was born to Eastern European Jewish immigrant parents, on July 1, 1934, making him the same age as Claude, the boy in the film. Like the boy in the film, Claude Berri was sent away during the occupation of Paris to live with a non-Jewish family. His birth name was Claude Berel Langmann, but he changed it to be more "French."
